  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice or Microsoft Word document file format.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font (11-point font for footnotes); all text, notes, and bibliography should be unjustified and should not use hyphenation.
  • Only Unicode fonts are employed, unless specific characters used in the article are not covered by Unicode and/or freely licensed Unicode fonts are not yet available.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Manuscript and Text Cultures accepts submissions on the topics related to pre-modern manuscripts, epigraphy, and texts. It particularly welcomes articles that apply innovative methods or compare different pre-modern cultures. The journal targets a broad inter-disciplinary audience, and the authors are encouraged, as much as possible, to use plain language that can be understood by scholars working on any pre-modern culture.

The editors enthusiastically welcome submissions that use digital technologies in the presentation of scholarly argument, including interactive features, videos and other multimedia elements, 3D models, etc. We encourage the authors to contact the Production Editor before the submission to discuss the planned features and the way they can be accommodated in the article.

Language and formatting

Submissions should normally be written in British English. If you propose to use another language, please consult the Editors.

Works written in a language other than the author’s native language must be proof-read and corrected by a native speaker prior to submission.

Authors are welcome to include their ORCID iD number.

We recommend that articles submitted to the journal be 8000 words without bibliography.

An abstract and up to 6 keywords should follow the title of the submission. Please include headings ‘abstract’ and ‘keywords.’ It should not be possible to learn the identity of the author from the submitted text or its ‘Properties’ as a file.

For detailed formatting instructions, please consult the current version of our style sheet. Users of Zotero are advised to use the Manuscript and Text Cultures CSL style.

Peer review policy

All submitted articles undergo initial editorial screening and double-blind peer review, with reviewers selected amongst scholars in the respective field. After acceptance, the author will be asked to revise the article in line with the referees’ suggestions. Articles that seriously fail to follow the stylesheet will be returned for correction. The article should be proof-read by the author before the final submission.

Charges

Thanks to generous support received from the Clay Sanskrit Library and The Queen's College, the journal does not charge the authors any processing or publication fees.
